Whether you need it for your shoes, gym bag, car, closet, fridge, or anywhere in between, coffee is a great option to keep those nasty smells away. After you’ve had your morning coffee, put the wet coffee grounds in a thin layer on a baking sheet and dry them in a 250° oven. Once you’ve completed that, store in an open jar and set it anywhere in your home where there may be bad aromas (kitchen cabinets, the refrigerator, the bathroom, near the litter box).

While many believe that espresso and coffee use different beans, this isn’t the case. Espresso can be made from either Arabica or Robusta and are equally as tasty when brewed properly. The difference lies in the process. Technically there are no “espresso beans” just a coffee bean that is roasted longer, ground finer and brewed in an espresso machine.

There are certain characteristics you should look for in a bean if you are on a journey to make the perfect espresso:

Choose a darker roast as they don’t change as much with age as lighter roasts

Stay away from lighter roasts and delicate flavors if you’re just starting out

Stick with deep flavor profiles (chocolate, caramel, maple for example)

Try and find the freshest bean possible – we recommend 7-21 days from roasting to make the perfect espresso with crema.

Espresso is made by forcing extremely hot water through coffee beans at a high pressure and speed – everything must be correctly set up to get that perfect cup, which is why making espresso necessitates the use of a particular machine. This differs vastly from drip coffee which is a no-fuss way to stay caffeinated.

However, that shouldn’t come as a surprise, should it? Especially when everyone knows that a single espresso shot is completely LOADED with all kinds of flavors and ingredients in a manner that coffee isn’t.

However, if you break things down by serving size, you’ll immediately notice that an average cup of coffee has more caffeine than a one to two oz shot of espresso. Which means while espresso has a higher caffeine content per ounce than coffee, you still get less caffeine from one shot of espresso than from one cup of coffee. Obviously, if you’re an espresso addict who consumes more than the suggested number of shots per day, this changes (which is 5, by the way).

The part of coffee that has the greatest effect on our brains is caffeine. We’ve observed that people love the effects of caffeine so much that frequent coffee drinkers have positive associations with coffee’s bitterness.

Caffeine is the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance on the planet and it interacts with the human brain in various ways:

Keeps You Feeling Alert

Caffeine molecules have a similar structure to a neurotransmitter called adenosine, which makes you feel sleepy when it builds up. Caffeine blocks adenosine, keeping it from slowing you down and giving your brain that fresh, alert feeling.

Boosts Brain Functioning

In addition to keeping you from feeling sleepy, caffeine also promotes the release of other neurotransmitters like noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin.

These compounds play a part in how our brains function, think, plan, and feel pleasure. When caffeine increases them, it can cause the following effects.

Improved mood

Higher performance for cognitive tasks

Better reaction time

Enhanced attention and learning abilities

Speeds Up Your Metabolism

The release of noradrenaline caused by the caffeine in coffee has the additional effect of increasing your metabolism and stimulating your body to burn fat.

Your metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns calories at rest. The higher your metabolic rate, the more calories you can burn, which makes it easier to lose weight and allows you to eat more without gaining weight.

May Make You Sleepy Later

While the caffeine in coffee definitely helps to perk up your brain, its effects are fairly short-term. After the boost of energy wears off, you may notice that you feel particularly sleepy.

Caffeine Dependency

If you drink coffee every day, your brain can also get used to a certain amount of caffeine. Your brain might then require more and more caffeine to feel the same energy boosting effects.

In extreme cases, your brain can also become dependent on your daily dose of caffeine from coffee. You might also experience headaches or other negative effects if you don’t get a daily dose of coffee. Because caffeine is a drug, it’s good to always monitor how much coffee you drink and slow down a bit if you notice any signs of dependency.

Antioxidants are very beneficial to the body, because they help to protect your cells against free radicals, which contribute to heart diseases and cancer.

This year the trend of putting hot sauce in coffee has been getting a lot of attention.

It started, in part, in response to a new Kickstarter project for Ujjo, a hot sauce for coffee. The creator, Lauren D’Souza, claims that it began as a joke when her friends dared her to drink her coffee with hot sauce in it. She did not enjoy it at first, but she believed this was only because of the vinegar in hot sauce.

Her experiment has now evolved into a product that is vinegar-free and designed specifically for blending with coffee. In response, many people have been exploring the possibilities of putting regular hot sauce in coffee as well to see what all the fuss is about.

Chef Megan Osborne told Well+Good that she enjoys using Sriracha sauce in her coffee, which is already an excellent, low-vinegar hot sauce.

I made a key mistake when I first tried this trend and I put way too much hot sauce in my coffee. As someone who enjoys spicy foods, I thought I was prepared for an entire teaspoon of hot sauce, but I could not have been more wrong.

This proportion was altogether too overpowering for a single cup of coffee and added a very intense aftertaste to the bitterness already present in coffee’s flavor profile. I must say, however, that the combination of heat and caffeine will definitely wake you up!

On my second attempt, I took a more reserved approach and added only a quarter of a teaspoon of hot sauce. I have to say this was much better.

With a small amount of hot sauce, you still get the unaltered flavors and aromas of your coffee, but with a pleasant kick of heat to finish. I could definitely get used to adding some spice to my morning coffee rituals.

Having learned my lesson from the hot sauce, I started small this time and decided to brew half a carafe of my normal french press coffee with the tip of a small chilli added to the grounds.

In fact, it’s a mix of many variables like bean type, grind, and roast.

Today, we take a look at our three favorite types of roasts and dive a little bit deeper into the intricacies of getting the perfect roast on a great coffee bean.

Since a geographic area was often identified with a very particular brewing style, and the names given to coffee roasts aligned themselves with that locality’s brewing process. For example, an “Italian roast” may be understood as being used to make espresso, a common Italian brewing process.

However, as our coffee cultures merge, the language associated with coffee roasts has been significantly distorted. When you factor in the fact that advertisers are attempting to entice customers by using seductive adjectives and language, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to know exactly what kind of coffee roast is in the package.

The next move is to master the art of espresso preparation. To make the perfect espresso, you must consider three factors: the coffee, the roast, and the brew.

Before we go any further, it is important to clarify that there is no such thing as an espresso bean. Espresso refers to the brewing method. There are only coffee beans. The roast of coffee beans is what separates them. Coffee beans can be roasted in a variety of ways, from light to dark. Beans that have been roasted in the medium to the medium-dark range are best for making espresso.

The color of beans will reveal a lot about how well they’ve been roasted. Roasts that are lighter in color are heated for a shorter time than darker roasts. They turn out to be the palest shade of brown of all the roasts.

Around 350°F – 400°F, coffee beans begin to take on their final roasted shape. This is known as “first crack,” and it occurs when the moisture being removed from beans is first detected by cracking. Light roasts are rarely cooked beyond the first cracks.

They’ll be the driest beans you’ve ever seen, with little or no oil evident on the surface. They have a more earthy taste. Light roasts have the most potent punch in that department since the roasting process cooks away the caffeine.

Roasted beans that are lightly roasted are also the most acidic. Yet, acidity in coffee does not contribute to the PH balance or what is known as a “sour” flavor, such as lemon. It refers to how similar the bean is to its normal green or fruity state. The more a bean is roasted, the further it is from its “normal” state, and the more acidity it loses.

While any roast can be used in any brewing process, an espresso made with a light roast will be disappointing. A light roast expresso can yield a coffee that is flat and lacks the richness and velvety finish associated with espresso.

They’re a little darker brown in color. The coffee’s taste and color would be a little darker than lighter roasts.

Although no oil will be apparent on the surface of the beans, the taste will be slightly less acidic than lighter roasts. They’ll have a little less caffeine content and a more natural flavor than their lighter counterparts.

A medium roast is a good place to start experimenting in your search for the perfect espresso.

The temperature of the roast is around 25°F higher than that of medium roasts.

The roasting time for these beans is from the beginning to the middle of the second crack.

The aromas of the beans would be highly representative of the flavor when roasting medium-dark roasts. Depending on the age and origin of the beans, flavors will vary from bittersweet to spicy, chocolatey, or caramel.

Italian baristas insist that medium or medium dark roasts are perfect for making espresso.

A good cold brew coffee is something that a lot of people, including myself, appreciate.

On a hot day, there’s nothing like a big cup of ice cold coffee to soothe the soul (or cold day no judgment). And it’s no surprise that so many people are enamored with the beverage.

The argument of better taste is one of the main reasons why so many people enjoy the drink.

Why?

The coffee is less bitter since the grounds are not exposed to high temperatures.
Some argue that cold brew coffee is less acidic than hot coffee, but according to Daily Coffee News, more research has recently been done on the topic. According to some reports, if you want your coffee to have less acidity, try a dark roast rather than a light roast.

Another advantage of cold brew is that it is a concentrate, allowing you to customize your cup of coffee. Add to your water ratio to make it stronger or weaker.

So, how do you make your own cold brew coffee at home?

To begin, grind your coffee. To make 4 cups of cold brew coffee, you’ll need 1 cup of coffee grounds. Grind your coffee to a medium to coarse grind (or buy pre-ground).

In your large bowl/jar fill with 4 cups of cold filtered water. Sprinkle the coffee grounds evenly over the top of the water. Let the coffee ‘bloom’ on top of the water for about 30 to 60 seconds (aka let the water soak in). Stir together.

Refrigerate after covering with plastic wrap. For better results, set aside for 12 to 14 hours.

In a mesh strainer, layer cheesecloth and position over a large bowl/jar. Using cheesecloth, strain the cold-brewed coffee. For extra smoothness, strain twice. Refrigerate your cold brew coffee for up to 10 days.

To serve pour over ice, find your perfect ratio of added water, milk, and/or sugar to the concentrate.

Most people recommend a 50/50 water down of the concentrate with either ice/water/milk. Personally, we prefer more of a 2/3 coffee 1/3 mix-in person but that is the beauty of cold brew my friends!

And of course, we recommend trying our original beans, coarsely ground for your cold brew adventure. Let us know how you like your coffee and how cold brewing at home has gone for you.
